This manuscript takes us to the very heart of French history and the religious wars of the 16th century. This is a letter sent from Paris by Gaspard de Coligny, leader of the Protestant party, to his wife Jacqueline d'Entremont, on August 18, 1572.
He informs her that on this day, the wedding between Henry of Navarre (the future King Henry IV) and Marguerite of Valois took place and that the festivities will follow.
This exceptional document is one of the last letters from Admiral de Coligny. In fact, just a few days later, on August 22, he was injured in an attack. On the night of August 24 to 25, 1572, the Saint-Barthélemy Day massacre broke out, during which he was finally assassinated.
This letter is all the more touching because it includes a recommendation at the bottom: “Let me know how this little one is doing.” Indeed, Jacqueline d'Entremont was then pregnant with Béatrice, who was born a few months after her father's death.
