In those days …
Dates are the milestones of history. Twenty-one events linked in some way to the Reformation are described in a hallway that connects the 16th-century rooms with the rest of the exhibition. These events include, for example, the Council of Constantinople (in the year 381), the invention of the printing press by Gutenberg (1456), Luther’s famous theses arguing against indulgences (1517) and the Edict of Nantes (1598). We can cite more recent dates, too, such as the founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross (1863), the martyrdom of Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1945) and the early victims of the religious conflict in Northern Ireland (from 1963).
Protestant connections
There is no official Protestant art. The works created by painters, writers, musicians and filmmakers may reflect a close alignment with Reformed or Lutheran traditions – or a (very Protestant) independence.
