Thursday, May 2, International Museum of the Reformation, 6:30pm (in French)
Could Reformed Protestantism have fostered the emergence of democracy as we know it today? This question takes up a thesis deeply rooted in both Protestant and Catholic memory, in both affirmative and negative modes. Is it fake news? How do you deliver a nuanced, historical perspective on the supposed influence of a religious denomination on the emergence of a political regime?
For five years, Marc Aberle investigated the subject, then published his findings in a monograph (La démocratie du croire. Les républiques imaginées des réformés, Alphil, 2023). He will present them in public at the MIR during what promises to be a fascinating evening.
