Playing with the gods

A visual, sound and cultural experience

This temporary exhibition presents religion via different forms of expression including myth, dance, theater, literature, sound, laughter even… video games. It looks at examples from Europe and beyond, and covers different points throughout history – from ancient times, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, right up to today’s world. There are over 100 representations of religion showcased in this exhibition including statues, paintings, books, engravings, objects, films and poetry. Ultimately these various forms of expression encourage a sense of playfulness and allow us to take a step back from the usual rhythm of everyday life.

There are five themes to discover along this journey: Far from the ways of the world, Dancing with the Gods, Laughing with the Gods, Judging the Gods of Others and Store of beliefs. A painting by Félix Vallotton, a sculpted head of the God Pan, a giant mask from Bali, a drawing by Sempé, an extract from “the Name of the Rose, and Purim rattles are some of the works selected by the historian of religions Philippe Borgeaud, curator of this exhibition.
